Dear Big Bird,

Can I get an autographed photo?

Also, I was wondering, do you eat meat? Or are you a vegetarian? What about fish, chicken, or pork? This is kinda important.

Thanks,

Christopher L. Jorgensen

Dear Friend:

How nice of you to write to me. I’m always happy to hear from friends like you. I’m going to keep your letter in my nest with all of my special belongings. In return, I’m sending you my autographed picture as a special thank you.

Thanks for writing to me and being my friend. I hope you will continue to watch me and my friends on Sesame Street.

Lots of Love,

Big Bird

My reaction:

For some inexplicable reason this letter makes my girlfriend/typist/editor sad. She tried to explain why. I think it comes down to her thinking it’s wrong to mislead kids into believing in things that aren’t real. I started to pretend like I believe Big Bird is real, and she got more upset.

Me, I think there are a lot of things out there more damaging to believe in than Big Bird.

And he’s a bit cooler in my book, since he wrote back! He didn’t sign the letter, and I’m not dumb enough to think he actually signed the picture. I probably have some PBS intern’s autograph, but I’d still like to think, if I had a kid, that wrote this same letter it would have been answered this way. My kid probably would have asked a question Big Bird would have answered though!

I do like the fact that I got a letter from The Queen of England within the same week as Big Bird. It tickles me that somehow this puts them all on the same level.

The whole eating meat question is still outstanding, but I am guessing Big Bird is a total vegetarian. Or he eats kids. Surprisingly, either works for me.
