Dear Lazlo Toth

Dear Mr. Toth,

I was wondering if you were dropped on your head as a baby. I am told this is a common infantile accident/injury, but I am having difficulty finding a documented case of anyone this has actually happened to.

After reading some small amount about you though, I have become convinced you exhibit all the symptoms these children carry into adulthood:

A nasally voice A certain moral ambiguity
Excessive hair Nearsightedness
Excessive masturbation Large ego
Small stature

If possible, could you let me know if you do engage in excessive masturbation (like more than 6 times a day), thus confirming my diagnosis? For some time now I worried I had been dropped on my head as an infant, since I too met most of these symptoms, but after an unexpected growth spurt in my early 30s I am no longer of small stature.

Thanks!

Love and pogo-sticks,

Christopher L. Jorgensen

p.s. any way I can get an autographed photo?

Denied!

My reaction:

This is the guy who got it rolling for me. He didn’t exactly give me the idea. I wrote M&M’s when I was in college. A semi-serious letter about how I bought a pack of their peanut M&M’s for 45 cents and there were only three in there, and while I do like their product, I thought 15 cents an M&M was a bit steep (this was in the early 90’s). They sent me coupons. I also wrote a TV dinner company and said their product was no where near as big as what was on the box. I got a letter back saying it was “enlarged to show detail.” I don’t remember if they sent me anything.

Regardless, Lazlo was the first to make me realize you could do this wholesale. I worked as a bookseller for over 4 years and hand-sold many copies of his books.

I have a link to an interview I’ll see if I can’t find in which he explains that the spoof letter market has basically fallen out, and where he accuses others of stealing his ideas. And if you think I’m ripping him off as well, then go ahead and think that way. I give him every credit I can, and you really should go out and read some of his books. There a hoot.
