Dear O’Reilly Media

Dear O'Reilly,

I was a bookseller for Borders for 4 years and one of the things I miss is the free shirts from O'Reilly. I just loved wearing all the cool animals. I still like your books and currently work in IT, so can still get away with wearing computer related shirts. I was wondering if you would send me a shirt! I've always looked fondly on any company that helps provide one of my basic human needs like clothing. Or you could send me a cheesecake or something. Food is another human need, but I think the shirt would be cooler.

Thanks,

Christopher L. Jorgensen

p.s. I wear an XL and like macs and anything to do with web design. I like any kind of cheesecake other than cherry (it's gross).

Denied!

My reaction:

There’s nothing mean in my letter. I even said I liked their products and offered to be a walking advertisement for their books. I really am a fan of their computer books, since they don’t assume you’re a “Dummy” just because you want to do something you don’t know how to do. At least Apple wrote back, even if it was a boring, marketing driven, boilerplate letter. I guess O’Reilly Media just can’t be bothered. That’s ok, I dig the “Que” books as well.

It’s true, I was a wage (if you want to call it that!) slave for Border’s and used to have a love/hate relationship with them. Now it’s just a hate/hate relationship. But I’ll go into that some other time.

I think I had like 20 O’Reilly shirts at one time (some were duplicates). One load of laundry and I had work shirts for a month. It was great, and I am guessing, since my loyalty can easily be bought, these bookseller perks did indeed influence what books I hawked. That and the fact that I do hate the “Dummy’s” series.

We can still make up, O’Reilly. Just let me know you care. Give me a little love.
